Move Over, James Traficant...
... you've got a new cell mate. In the midst of Oscar fever, we almost forgot to follow up on Randy "Duke" Cunningham, the former US Republican Congressman who was sentenced this past week for taking $2.4 million in bribes from military contractors.
It was possible for him to receive ten years, and yet he received only eight years and four months. He was taken into custody immediately. The sentence was the longest ever handed down for a member or former member of Congress in a federal corruption case.
That being said, it is almost unthinkable to hear that the former Congressman will still be eligible for his Federal pension once he finishes his term...errr....uhhh....sentence. After accepting mansions, yachts, and millions of dollars to break the law, he will receive taxpayer money supposedly earned while in the service of his country.
Shameful.
Think about James Traficant, and the horror of a Congressman that he was, and then think that his sentence was only eight years. Now fast forward to Randy "Duke" Cunningham and his "menu of bribery", and think that his sentence was only four months longer.
The best thing to come out of this might be the implication of Katherine Harris, the Wicked Witch of the 2000 Presidential Election, currently running for the Senate in Florida. Watch out for that kharma, Kathy... it's a bitch.
What do they all have in common? Why, of course, they're all thieves.
P.S. - if you're wondering what James Traficant is doing these days behind bars, you might want to take a look at some of his artwork.
