Summer Films "Heat Up"

Yup.... May is the traditional time to roll out the Hollywood Blockbusters, and crank up the Summer Movie Season into high gear. This year promises to be no different. And so all of the trailers have been rolling out to tease us into the spirit of the season.

We start off in May with MI III, which has freaky, couch-bouncing Tom Cruise in it as always, but then has Philip Seymour Hoffman and Billy Crudup, so who knows?

The following week we have the remake of the Poseidon Adventure, which could potentially sink, save for its director, Wolfgang Peterson, who directed such amazing water-oriented films like "Das Boot" and "The Perfect Storm" - he knows how to make people drown on film.

The third weekend has Tom Hanks and The Da Vinci Code making its cinematic premiere. That is, based on how the law suit turns out, I suppose.

Opening over Memorial Day Weekend is the flick for all those sci-fi and comic book fanatics - Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen in X-Men: The Last Stand. I'm not a fan of the series to begin with, and all I have to know about this is that one of the new mutants, Beast, is being played by Kelsey Grammer. Still and all, it's fine for summer fare.

This, of course, is all leading up to the MAJOR release, sharing the Memorial Day Weekend relase date with X-Men, on May 26, 2006.

Imagine, if you will, a darkened movie theatre. Dramatic, drum pounding and bass-laden music begins stirring as words begin flashing across the screen:

AT SUNDANCE IT RECEIVED THREE STANDING OVATIONS

IT WILL SHAKE YOU TO YOUR CORE

IF YOU LOVE YOUR PLANET...
IF YOU LOVE YOUR CHILDREN...
YOU HAVE TO GO SEE THIS FILM.

BY FAR THE MOST TERRIFYING FILM YOU WILL EVER SEE.

There's a crescendo in the music, followed by the most terrifying sound a summer film fan can possibly imagine... THE VOICE OF AL GORE LECTURING ON GLOBAL WARMING!!!

Think I'm kidding? Watch the trailer for yourself.

Now, DO NOT get me wrong. I'm a BIG Al Gore fan. I'm very much in support of doing everything we can to prevent global warming. And An Inconvenient Truth has a LOT of buzz as being an excellent film.

But is it really THAT excellent? That they create THIS trailer for it? And they choose to release it on Memorial Day Weekend?

I'm not sure how many people will ultimately see it, as they'll all be in their fossil-fuel powered cars and SUVs, heading for the beach.
