Why We REALLY Watch The Super Bowl
Yes, I love football. Not college football. Professional football. The NFL. NFC East, to be exact. A Burgundy-And-Gold-Bleeding Redskins fan.
The Super Bowl is a must-watch for me. This is the last game that means anything in the season. Sure, there's the Pro Bowl - but who cares, right? No, the Super Bowl marks the end of the season, and the long drought of actually interesting sports (basketball and hockey? puh-leese.) until the summer when football once again returns.
But let's face it - the BEST football games are generally played in the playoffs - not in the actual Super Bowl itself. So, why do we watch, then? Other than the fact that... well, come on, it's the SUPER BOWL, and what else are you going to watch on a Sunday night in February?
We here at PTF watch for two reasons - Super Bowl ads and new shaving technology. If you're interested in the former, here's a listing of all the ads slated to be airing during the Super Bowl. I'm not sure how I feel about dancing "Whopperettes", and Coke will be pushing two new drinks - Full Throttle and Vault. In an interesting "cola wars" move, Coke has decided to fully sponsor the pre-game advertising, and purchased no ads during the game itself, leaving Pepsi unchallenged during the game.
Onward we move, from advertsiing to scientific breakthroughs. When science and technology come together in a brilliant, effortless way, the only way to properly showcase such an innovation is during the Super Bowl. And so it is once again, with Gillette premiering it's latest shaving technology, the Fusion Power, in a campaign reportedly budgeted at close to $100 million dollars (yes, that's right... say it like Dr. Evil)
But what makes the Fusion Power so special? Does it have three blades? Four? No! It actually has (drumroll please) FIVE blades, plus another one hidden in the back! How did we ever manage to get along with a pansy-like four blades?!?
So, during the Super Bowl this Sunday, sit back and relax, safe in secure in the fact that capitalism is alive and well in the United States, despite what any economist tries to tell you. Don't listen... just consume.... consume.... consume....
