IN THE FLESH - Tony C. Rudy

IN THE FLESH is a new PTF feature that will bring to you profiles of the people you probably don't know, but you should.

Jack Abramoff, Congressman Tom DeLay, Senator Conrad Burns, Congressman Bob Ney - these are the faces that most people know and recognize in the scandal thus far.

The faces behind these people, however, are largely the individuals who Pressed The Flesh - who worked the angles and made the actions happen.

Tony C. Rudy is the perfect inaugural entry to PTF's IN THE FLESH.

Alexander Strategy Group's website gets us started:

Tony is a veteran of the House Republican Leadership where he served as a top aide to House Majority Whip Tom DeLay (R-TX) for over five years.... Tony served DeLay in a number of capacities including Press Secretary, Policy Director/General Counsel and Deputy Chief of Staff.... As Deputy Chief of Staff to the House Majority Whip, Tony had extraordinary access and influence in the legislative process. He ran DeLay’s well-known member services operation that enabled Tony to develop personal relationships with dozens of House members including current members of the House Leadership, Committee Chairman and members of key committees including the Appropriations Committee, Commerce Committee, the Ways and Means Committee and the Financial Services Committee. Tony also has extensive contacts with hundreds of key staff members in Congress.
As it turns out, Rudy was obviously with DeLay in 2000 on the now infamous European trip which was charged to Abramoff's credit card. When Abramoff went to work for Greenberg Traurig, Rudy was his first Capitol Hill hire. Business Week does a really nice job profiling the relationship:

At 6:56 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, Congress was wrapping up a rare lame-duck session. But Tony Rudy, deputy chief of staff to then-House Majority Whip Tom DeLay (R-Tex.), still had work to do. He shot a terse e-mail to lobbyist Jack Abramoff: "Got the pow thing done." Abramoff forwarded Rudy's message to another lobbyist, Ronald W. Kleinman, at the law firm Greenberg Traurig LLP: "Email from Tony Rudy. Looks like it is done.... The guy's DiMaggio."
Sources suggest that Rudy will be the next to cut a plea deal, opening the flow of information even further.

If you'd like to "lobby" Tony C. Rudy on his decision, feel free to contact him directly.
