D'oh Say Can You See?

The First Amendment of the United States Constitution provides U.S. citizens the freedoms of speech, religion, the press, of assembly and the right to a day in court. Precisely, it states:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
A study released today states that only one person out of one thousand could correctly name all five freedoms granted by the First Amendment. That's .01%

Sadly, but not entirely surprisingly, 22% of the thousand people surveyed could name all five characters in The Simpsons. That means that while only one person could name all five Freedoms, 220 could name all five Simpsons.

Maybe we're being a little hard on the respondants, though. After all, I am a HUGE fan of The Simpsons, and pop culture, in general. Anyone could have an off day and forget that pesky "redress of grievances,"... right?

Unfortunately, the percentage of people able to simply list more than one of the Rights afforded by the First Amendment was only 28%.

38%, however, believed that the Right to "take the FIFTH"in court is granted by the FIRST Amendment.

About one in five thought the right to own a pet was one of the freedoms.

I'm just curious what the percentage of those polled believe in the war effort in Iraq, where we're supposedly sacrificing the lives of our troops to provide these Rights to the citizens of Iraq. Joe Six-Pack will proudly display his magnetic flag, splatterted with mud, and his yellow "Support Our Troops" magnet - proudly Made in China... but can't recall the rights that are being defended... supposedly.

And then we wonder why the world looks down at us?
